Dog Daycare in Ullared
12 December, 2023
Now you don’t have to worry about what to do with your dog while visiting Ullared and/or shopping at Gekås. Since last summer, you can leave your beloved dog at daycare near the shopping center.
Ullareds Hunddagis (dog daycare) is located just 1 km from the Gekås shopping center and is open during the summer. It’s a drop-in daycare, so there’s no need to make any reservations or plan far in advance. Just bring your dog! The daycare is, however, limited to 30 dogs, so you might want to book in advance, after all. Each dog gets their own 18 square meter roofed and walled yard and individual dog house. Each dog is taken for a walk and entertained, one at a time, and never together with the other dogs.
There are a few restrictions. Every dog needs to be vaccinated and insured, and can be no higher than 65cm.
The daycare is run by Maria Frick, who today also owns the company Working dogs education. During the summer months, Maria and her co-workers keep Ullareds Dog Daycare open for Ullared visitors who need a place for their dog while shopping.
On their websites, they give the following assurance… “We want you as a dog owner to feel safe leaving your dog with us, and are convinced that positive reinforcement and care are the basic cornerstones for our four-legged friends. At Ullareds Dog Nursery, there is no room for controversial methods such as electric collars or other unpleasant obedience methods. We believe in building strong bonds between dogs and people through respect, patience and rewards. Our team of experienced dog enthusiasts focus on rewarding desired behavior instead of punishing negative actions.“
Last summer they were open June through August. However, they are looking to expand their opening months and possibly stay open May through September, in the future. Visit their website for opening hours and contact information.
Take care!
Swedish town names that ends with -red
16 November, 2022
Have you ever driven through southern Sweden and wondered why there are so many town names with the -red ending? Ullared is by far not the only one.
Town names that ends with -red are most common in Götaland, which is the southern part of Sweden. Pretty much anything south of Vänern – Sweden’s largest lake. The word red comes from an old Swedish word rydh or even older Norse “riudh”, which was a description for a clearing….an open area, such as used for cattle grazing or development near a forest. Some names go back to the viking era, but most of them are from the later half of the middle ages. Although the names are found all across southern Sweden, most of them are in the provinces of Halland, Småland, and Västergötland. It’s also common that the first part of the town name is the name of a person, such as in Ullared….an open area named by/after Ulla.

Thefts and Shoplifting at Gekås
17 June, 2022
Every year, around 100 shoplifters get caught at Gekås in Ullared, which is about half of all shoplifter arrests in Falkenberg County. When the police interrogate the shoplifters, more than half of them admit to their crimes.
The usual punishment is probation and/or a fine. But the reasons why they shoplift might be more interesting. Not that it’s a valid excuse, but it’s not only for the same reason.
Here are some:
Wanting excitement in a boring life
Wanting to succeed at something after having a lot of failures in their life
Couldn’t afford Christmas gifts
Habit from a young age that stuck with them
Resell items to make money
Gekås and their security guards have started a new program that has reduced shoplifting with 30%. They call it “safe in store”. They are doing this by interacting more with the customers, and especially those that may act suspiciously. Since they can’t call police to arrest someone until they have passed the cashier’s line, they are trying different methods. They are trying to be more proactive. Things like approaching someone putting items in their pocket and offering them a shopping basket or a cart. Or talking with them and asking them if they need help carrying their items to the cashier, and so on. More attention in the store has led to less thefts and not as many incidents where they need to call the police. Some shoplifters have even thanked the store staff that they were stopped before they committed a crime.
Stay within the law!
Ullared opens the largest shoe store in Sweden
25 Mars, 2022
Gekås has never sold shoes before. That was an agreement with another fellow entrepreneur in Ullared – Sko-Boo, who only sold shoes. Now they are one and the same.
Sko-Boo is now found inside Gekås, on the second floor, and it has become the largest shoe store in Sweden, which proudly takes a special interest in children’s shoes. They have everything from rubber boots to sneakers. Here you’ll find shoes for the whole family. The manager recommends everyone at least gets one pair of white sneakers, which he says can be worn for every occassion.
